WhatsApp Loan Scam

It has come to our attention that scammers are using an advertisement on Facebook asking people to apply for a loan through WhatsApp. Scammers are impersonating a variety of financial institutions, including NE PA Credit Union. They are using NE PA branding and posing as NE PA loan officers.

 

NE PA Credit Union will NEVER ask you to apply for a loan via WhatsApp. If you receive an offer to apply for a loan via WhatsApp, disregard the information and immediately contact us at 570-421-5585.

 

A WhatsApp loan scam is when a scammer uses WhatsApp to trick you into taking out a loan and stealing your sensitive information.

 

Here are some signs of a WhatsApp loan scam:

  • Unfamiliar phone numbers: Be careful of messages from unknown numbers, especially if they look suspicious.
  • Urgent requests: If the user asks for an urgent money transfer, don't send money until you're sure it's not a scam.
  • Spelling and grammar mistakes: Scammers often don't put much effort into their messages.
  • Generic greetings: Scammers may use generic greetings.
  • Suspicious links and attachments: Scammers may ask you to click on a link, download an app, or activate a new feature through a link.
  • Offers that are too good to be true: Scammers may offer quick loans with low interest rates.
  • Vague messages: Scammers may send messages that are vague.
  • Verification code requests: Scammers may ask for a verification code.
     

If you, or someone you know, is a victim of this type of scam, you should:

  • Contact your local police department.
