5 Steps to Prepare to Purchase Your New Home

Follow these five steps to get ready to purchase your new home:

  1. Consider how much you can afford. When purchasing a home, a common rule of thumb is to spend about 30% of your monthly gross income on housing. That includes costs like mortgage principal and interest, property taxes, insurance, and maintenance.
  2. Check your credit score and report. Resolving errors or incorrect information often helps increase your credit score, giving you more attractive financing options.   4. Plan your home purchase. Make sure you have enough money for a down payment. Find a real estate professional you can trust to look out for your best interests. (Ask friends or family for referrals.) And, get your documentation together, like proof of employment and other financial information.
  5. Make a deposit. When purchasing a home, the deposit is called an earnest money deposit. This deposit shows you are a serious buyer. Generally, earnest money deposits range from 1% to 2% of the home's purchase price and are refundable under specific circumstances.
